Research Infosource Inc. Releases Canada's Top 100 Corporate R&D Spenders List
Total Spending Tops $11.1 billion - increase of 28.5%
Toronto - June 26, 2001 - R&D expenditures by Canada's Top 100 Spenders grew by leaps and bounds in fiscal 2000 according to Canada's Top 100 Corporate R&D Spenders List, released today by Research Infosource Inc. (www.researchinfosource.com).
The total R&D spending by Canada's Top 100 rose dramatically from $8.7 billion in 1999 to $11.1 billion in 2000, a jump of 28.5%. Membership in Research Infosource's "$100 Million Club", companies that spend $100 million or more annually on R&D activities, grew from 11 in 1999 to 15 in 2000. Leading the charge was Nortel Networks with an investment of more than $5.9 billion in 2000. Pratt and Whitney Canada ($331 million) came second, followed by Magna International ($246.5 million), then Ericsson Canada ($237.8 million), with ATI Technologies ($224.3 million) rounding out the Top 5 for Fiscal 2000.
The Communications/Telecommunications Equipment industry dominated Top 100 spending with 15 companies spending $6.8 billion, 61% of the total for 2000. Second place went to Pharmaceuticals/Biotechnology with over $970 million (9%), and the Software and Computer Services industry came in third, spending nearly $614 million, which represents 6% of the total.
Twenty-eight companies increased their R&D spending by 50% or more from 1999 to 2000. Top gainers include, 724 Solutions, JDS Uniphase, PMC Sierra and Sierra Wireless.
Sixteen companies saw decreases in R&D spending from 1999 to 2000. Petro-Canada, with a decline of 54.5% is at the top of this list. Second place TransCanada Pipelines was down 43%, and bucking the Pharma/Bio trend of increased R&D spending, a decrease of 37.9% puts Hoffman-La Roche in third place.
