Quebec Companies Increase R&D Spending by only 8.7% in 2000 According to Research Infosource's Canada's Top Corporate R&D Spenders Report

Toronto - August 28, 2001 -Quebec companies increased their R&D spending by 8.7% in Fiscal 2000, according to Canada's Top Corporate R&D Spenders Report published by Research Infosource Inc. (www.researchinfosource.com).

The 71 Quebec firms tracked in the report posted revenues of over $66 billion in 1999 and invested $1.4 billion in R&D. For 2000, revenues rose to $78 billion and R&D spending went up to over $1.5 billion, a modest growth of 8.7% in R&D expenditures.

Overall, Canadian firms increased their R&D spending from $9.3 billion in 1999 to $11.9 billion in 2000. This is a 27.8% increase for the 330 companies tracked in the report.

Looking at R&D growth from 1999 to 2000 by province, B.C. firms registered the highest rate of growth at 73.5% while revenues rose by only 24.8%. In Ontario R&D growth is 29.5%, keeping pace with a revenue growth of 25.7%. Alberta's R&D growth of 16.4% lags far behind its revenue growth of 65.1%.

"While Quebec companies are increasing the amount they spend on R&D, they are showing a decline in the percent of revenues invested in R&D", says Ron Freedman, CEO of Research Infosource Inc. "In 1999 they were investing 2.1% of revenues into R&D, but in 2000 it was 1.9%, a drop of 9.5%."
