Nova Scotia Universities Increase Sponsored Research Income by 67.7% According to Canada's Top 50 Research Universities List

Toronto - October 25, 2001 - Sponsored research income for the six Nova Scotia universities on Canada's Top 50 Universities List jumped by 67.7% from Fiscal 1999 to 2000 according to Research Infosource Inc. (www.researchinfosource.com). This is well above the average of 24% for the Top 50. Sponsored research income includes government and non-government sources.

The six Nova Scotia institutions on the Top 50 List are: Dalhousie, holding 13th position, up from 16th in 1999; St. Francis Xavier in 38th place jumps 7 spaces from 45th in 1999; University College of Cape Breton is 44th , dropping two places from 42nd; Nova Scotia Agricultural College moves up two places to 45th from 47th; Acadia University comes in at number 47, edging up one spot from 48th; and Saint Mary's University squeezes into the Top 50 by moving to 50th place from 51st in 1999. Together these universities accounted for $92.9 million in sponsored research income in 2000, up from $55.4 million in 1999. The Top 50 total for 2000 was nearly $2.8 billion for Fiscal 2000.

Four of the six are in the top 10 universities ranked by research income growth: St. Francis Xavier was 2nd with a jump of 81.1%, Dalhousie holds 4th place with an increase of 71.3%, Nova Scotia Agricultural College is 8th with a 53.9% increase, and Acadia University rounds out the Top 10 with 50.5%.

"Nova Scotia's dramatic increase in sponsored research income is also reflected in a high research intensity, dollars per full-time faculty, of its universities", says Ron Freedman, CEO of Research Infosource. "Reporting an increase of 62.3% puts Nova Scotia institutions well above the Top 50 average of 23.4%."

While Nova Scotia's universities reported the largest jump in sponsored research income (67.7%), Saskatchewan's two universities also showed an impressive increase of almost 42%.. Six provinces reported a growth rate below the Top 50 average of about 24%: British Columbia (19.6%), Alberta (20.8%), Manitoba (14.4%), Ontario (20.4%), New Brunswick (6.5%) and Newfoundland (21.9%). Québec came in just above the average figure at 28.2%Prince Edward Island was the only province to show a decrease as UPEI's sponsored research income dropped by 24.1% from 1999 to 2000.

With 16 universities, Ontario accounted for 38% (a little over a $1 billion) of the Top 50 sponsored research income in 2000. Quebec, with 13 universities took 30% of the total ($815 million). Alberta's three universities put it in 3rd place with 12%. B.C. is in 4th place with it's four universities accounting for 8%. Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba shared 5th position with 3% each. New Brunswick and Newfoundland both accounted for 1%. PEI, with one university was less than 1% of the total.

The top 10 universities on the Research Infosource List all reported sponsored research income greater than $100 million dollars. Leading the exclusive "$100 Million Club" was the University of Toronto ($372.1 million), followed by the Université de Montréal ($253.1 million), McGill ($234.3 million), University of Alberta ($206.7 million), Université Laval ($168.4 million), UBC ($166.0 million), University of Calgary ($134.5 million) University of Ottawa ($114.6 million), University of Western Ontario ($109.2 million), and McMaster University ($106.9 million). These 10 universities accounted for 68% ($1.87 billion) of Top 50 sponsored research income in Fiscal 2000.
