Toronto - June 25, 2002 - Ontario companies dominate Canada's Top 100 Corporate R&D Spenders List, released today by Research Infosource Inc. A total of 58 Ontario-headquartered companies made the list, holding 7 of the top 10 positions.
- Nortel Networks #1, retains its top position, but decreases R&D spending by over $900 million from 2000.
- JDS Uniphase #2, moves up from 8th spot in 2000 with $504.6 million in R&D spending in 2001, nearly 200% jump.
- Magna International #4, slips from 3rd position despite a 45.7% increase in R&D expenditures to $359.2 million.
- Ericsson Canada #5, drops one spot from 4th, posting $270 million in R&D spending, a 13.5% increase.
- ATI Technologies #6, moves down from 5th place, increasing R&D spending by 13.9% to $255 million.
- IBM Canada #7, new to the list in 2002 with $250 million in R&D expenditures in 2001.
- Atomic Energy of Canada #9, slides from 7th place in 2000 with $178.9 million in R&D spending, a 3.2% hike.
Of the top 10 firms ranked by R&D growth, three Ontario companies Delano Technologies (software and computer services), Certicom (communications/telecom equipment) and JDS Uniphase (communications/telecom equipment) are numbers 3, 5, and 6. Each increased R&D investment by at least 200% from 2000 to 2001.
Three Ontario firms are also among the top 10 research-intensive (R&D as a percentage of revenue) companies. Ottawa medical devices manufacturer World Heart Corporation, and two Toronto firms, 724 Solutions (communications/telecom equipment) and Visible Genetics (Pharmaceutical/biotechnology), each spent over 100% of revenues on R&D activities.
Six Ontario companies, Moore Corporation, Genpharm, Corel, Falconbridge, Noranda and GSI Lumonics reduced R&D spending by between 20 and 50%.
"Ontario companies dramatically increased R&D investments as profits grew, particularly in the IT sector", says Ron Freedman, CEO of Research Infosource. "Although strong showings by some firms were not sufficient to off-set huge cuts by Nortel, the overall prognosis for R&D in Canada is one of continued health."
Overall, Canada's leading firms invested $11.9 billion in research and development for fiscal 2001, up a modest 3% from $11.5 billion in 2000. However, Nortel Networks poor performance masked a healthy underlying trend, other Top 100 spending rose by 23.3%. Holding 1st place in R&D spending for fiscal 2001 is Nortel Networks ($5 billion), followed JDS Uniphase ($504.6 million) with Pratt and Whitney Canada ($440 million) in 3rd position, Magna International ($359.2 million) is 4th, and Ericsson Canada ($270 million) rounds out the top five.
Breaking the list down by province, 58 of the top 100 companies are headquartered in Ontario, 20 in Québec, 11 in B.C., 10 in Alberta and one in Manitoba.
