Seven of the Québec companies made Research Infosource's elite "$100 Million Club", reserved for firms that invested $100 million or more in R&D activities: Pratt &Whitney, Alcan, Tembec, Pfizer, Bombardier, Merck Frosst, and Hydro-Québec.
Three Québec firms, Pfizer (pharmaceuticals/biotechnology), NSI Global (communications/telecommunication equipment) and ConjuChem (pharmaceutical/biochem) made the list of the top 10 companies ranked by R&D growth, each increasing R&D spending by over 100% between 2000 and 2001. Montreal's ConjuChem also tops the list of the most research-intensive (R&D spending as a percentage of revenues) firms.
Four Québec companies decreased their R&D investments from 2000 to 2001: Bombardier (-6.7%), CMC Electronics (-12.9%), SR Telecom (-7.8%) and Schering Canada (-34.8%)..
"Québec firms are holding their own in turbulent economic times", says Ron Freedman, CEO of Research Infosource Inc. "The Québec government 's strategies integrating and supporting R&D activities in the province are bearing fruit."
Overall, Canada's leading firms invested $11.9 billion in research and development for fiscal 2001, up a modest 3% from $11.5 billion in 2000. However, Nortel Networks poor performance masked a healthy underlying trend, other Top 100 spending rose by 23.3%. Holding 1st place in R&D spending for fiscal 2001 is Nortel Networks ($5 billion), followed JDS Uniphase ($504.6 million) with Pratt & Whitney Canada ($440 million) in 3rd position, Magna International ($359.2 million) is 4th, and Ericsson Canada ($270 million) rounds out the top five.
Breaking the list down by province, 58 of the top 100 companies are headquartered in Ontario, 20 in Québec, 11 in B.C., 10 in Alberta and one in Manitoba.
