Toronto - December 18, 2002 - Alberta universities lead the country in research intensity - sponsored research income per full-time faculty for fiscal 2001, according to Canada's Top Research Universities Report 2002 released today by Research Infosource Inc. (www.researchinfosource.com). Alberta's 5 institutions posted an average of $130,300 per full-time faculty. Quebec is in second place with $124,500, Ontario ranks third with $108,500. Saskatchewan with 2 universities makes it into fourth with $85,500 per full-time faculty. Manitoba with $71,900 pushes British Columbia into sixth place with $69,800 per faculty position. Nationally, research intensity, showed a healthy increase in 2001, rising from $82,000 per faculty in 2000 to $98,800 in 2001, a jump of 20.4%.
Measuring total sponsored research income per capita (per provincial resident) puts Alberta out front once again. Alberta universities attracted $136 of sponsored research income for each Albertan in fiscal 2001. Québec came second with $133 per capita, and Ontario came third with $115 for each Ontario resident. Saskatchewan is fourth with $113 and Nova Scotia rounds out the top 5 with $95 per capita. Manitoba is a close sixth with $92 per resident. British Columbia is a disappointing seventh with only $65 per capita, just a little over half the national average of $110.
"Alberta also garnered the highest amount of research income per university", says Ron Freedman, CEO, Research Infosource Inc. "The five Alberta institutions averaged $83.6 million of sponsored research income."
In fiscal 2001, Ontario's 19 universities posted just over $1.3 billion of sponsored research income. This represents 40% of all sponsored research income nation-wide, according to Québec's 16 universities accounted for $983 million or 29% of all funding. Alberta's 5 institutions attracted 12%, and British Columbia's 7 universities took in 8% of the total. In total, Canada's top research universities generated $3.4 billion in 2001.
